Reading
We have been reading as a whole class The Little House in the Big Woods. We are about half way through the book, just finishing chapter 7: The Sugar Snow. We have been reading it together every other day. On the off days, the students read independently and I also call students to read one on one with me. Please continue to check that your student is completing their reading log on school nights! |
Writing
The students are nearly finished with Unit 3 of IEW wherein they retell a narrative story. They have been reading a short story and adding more information to it, such as where or when it takes place as well as what the characters look like and why they make certain choices, good or bad. They also expand on what the lesson of the story is. Their drafts are divided into three paragraphs, each one representing the three parts of a story: character/setting, plot/problem,and conflict/resolution. We have just one more week with this unit then the class will work on summarizing a reference paragraph, choosing its most important facts that explain the topic best. The writing for this unit is much shorter compared to unit 3. The students will be writing only one, thorough paragraph in unit 4! |
Handwriting
The second graders have officially moved from manuscript writing to cursive! We will
be working on the basic cursive strokes, and lowercase letters, i, t, u, w, e, and this month.
