Reading:
The children are doing so well in reading that almost everyone will be in or complete level two by the
end of the school year. We have been working on the silent bossy “e” in depth and matching pictures
to words with other phonograms. It is very important that they keep practicing their decoding skills
and work through the summer on books that will help them master reading. Again, read to your child
daily. Create an environment in which reading is the preferred past time - not video games and
movies. Reading requires time set apart and an ability to focus and work the brain. The attention-
grabbing, rapid moving, shallow nature of media does not encourage the habits necessary to become
a fluent and thoughtful reader. The Summer Reading Challenge is a good opportunity to encourage
this important skill and to help them become real readers, i.e. someone who loves time spent with a
good book. I will be sending home their phonics workbooks and any of the little reading booklets
that they have not read though with me for practice over the summer.
